The Australian Crime Commission (ACC) commenced operations on 1 January 2003 (see also entry for Inter-Governmental Committee of the Australian Crime Commission). The ACC replaced the National Crime Authority (NCA), the Australian Bureau of Criminal Intelligence (ABCI) and the Office of Strategic Crime Assessments (OSCA). The role of the ACC is to: undertake criminal intelligence collection and analysis; set clear national criminal intelligence priorities; and conduct intelligence led investigations of criminal activity of national significance including the conduct and/or coordination of investigative and intelligence taskforces approved by the ACC Board. The ACC has access to coercive powers which are exercised by its Examiners.
